John of John
What it's about
Out of money and with little to show for art school, John-Calum Macleod takes the ferry home to the Scottish island of Harris. At the windswept family croft, Cal falls back into his old life, caught between his father, John, a sheep farmer, weaver and pillar of the Presbyterian church, and his Glaswegian grandmother Ella, who has kept an uneasy peace with her son-in-law for decades, while Cal wonders whether he can ever be himself there.
Why it's worth reading
It was a finalist for the 2026 Booker Prize, from the author of Shuggie Bain, which won it. It's a tender, funny and painful novel about fathers, sons and belonging.
